Misandry is the hatred of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against men or boys, often manifesting as sexual discrimination, denigration, or violence. The term originated in the late 19th century. Addressing it involves recognizing it as a form of bigotry, distinct from, yet compared to, Misogyny.

Unlike misogyny, which is often described as a systemic force shaping laws and institutions, misandry is typically described as an interpersonal attitude or prejudice.

  • Examples: Manifestations include denigration of men, sexual objectification, or the assumption of inherent negative traits (e.g., that men are inherently dangerous or disposable).
  • Confusion with Feminism: While often conflated by critics, many argue that misandry is not feminism, as feminism aims for gender equality rather than the hatred of men.

Users of men's rights discussion forums on websites such as 4chan and Reddit have claimed that misandry is widespread, established in preferential treatment of women, and shown by discrimination against men.[10][6] Men's rights activists (MRAs) and other masculinist groups have characterized modern laws concerning divorce, domestic violence, conscription, circumcision, and treatment of male rape victims as examples of institutional misandry. However, in virtually all societies, misandry lacks institutional and systemic support comparable to misogyny.[1]
